When talking about ballistic helmets, performance is not just about "stopping a bullet". Unlike vests or plates, a helmet faces highly variable threats, often difficult to anticipate, especially fragments and splinters. It is in this context that the NIJ 0106.01 standard and the V50 indicator make perfect sense.

The NIJ 0106.01 Standard: A Testing Framework for Ballistic Helmets

The NIJ 0106.01 standard, published by the National Institute of Justice, defines a testing protocol specifically designed for flexible ballistic helmets.

It evaluates the helmet's resistance to pistol-type threats (9×19 mm, .357 Magnum, .44 Magnum), while imposing strict control over backface deformation. A helmet may stop a projectile without being compliant if this deformation exceeds the limits set by the standard.

Shots are fired at different areas of the shell, including near the edges and fastening systems, to ensure homogeneous protection across the entire helmet.

V50: A Comparative Measure of Ballistic Performance

The V50 is a statistical value expressed in meters per second (m/s). It corresponds to the speed at which a projectile has a 50% chance of penetrating the helmet and a 50% chance of being stopped.

In operational reality, it is often impossible to know the exact speed of a projectile or fragment in advance. The V50 therefore primarily allows for objectively characterizing and comparing the ballistic performance of different helmets, based on a measurable and reproducible figure.

The V50 thus functions as a comparison tool, almost like a common benchmark, allowing one helmet to be evaluated against another, independently of a unique or idealized scenario.

A Particularly Relevant Indicator Against Shrapnel and Fragments

The V50 is particularly useful for ballistic helmets because their primary role is not only to face direct shots but, above all, to protect against:

  • shell splinters,

  • secondary fragments,

  • projections at variable speeds.

In these situations, helmets are often the first effective protection. The V50 then makes it possible to evaluate a helmet's ability to resist this type of threat, where a simple caliber-based certification quickly reaches its limits.

NIJ 0106.01 and V50: Two Complementary Readings

The NIJ 0106.01 standard does not set a universal mandatory V50 value, but both approaches are complementary in the analysis of a ballistic helmet:

  • NIJ 0106.01 validates a recognized normative testing framework and precise compliance criteria,

  • the V50 provides a comparative reading of actual ballistic performance, particularly against fragments.

A serious helmet is therefore not judged solely on its certification, but also on the ballistic data that allows it to be positioned in relation to other models.
